Grava
Grava was founded in 2014 by experienced winemaker and viticulturist Alistair Gardner, along with his wife Karla Falloon and her family. The name “Grava” comes from the Spanish word for “gravel.” This is a nod both to the gravelly alluvial soils of their site and to Alistair’s long-standing connection with Spain. Grava focuses on cool-climate varieties including Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery embraces a “site-driven” and sustainable approach: grapes are hand-harvested, vineyards are managed with care, and winemaking balances tradition with modern methods. Beyond just their own wines, Grava also offers contract winemaking and winery-facility services (grape supply, bottling, storage) — collaborating with other producers and helping sustain local wine-making community.

Bryterlater
Bryterlater was founded in 2019 by winemaker James Graves Opie. James is originally from Victoria (Australia). After studying winemaking and viticulture at university and gaining experience in places like Tasmania, he moved to New Zealand and eventually established Bryterlater in the North Canterbury / Waipara region. The name “Bryterlater” is inspired by the album Bryter Layter by musician Nick Drake — a deliberate nod to a mood or philosophy rather than a traditional winery naming convention. Bryterlater sources grapes from certified-organic or organic-conversion vineyards in North Canterbury / Waipara. The winery emphasizes minimal intervention in the cellar — using wild/indigenous yeasts, minimal handling, and a “less is more” philosophy. The goal: wines that “speak for themselves” and reflect their vineyard’s site and vintage rather than the winemaker’s imprint. Bryterlater aims to capture the “energy of the vineyard” and produce wines that are deeply considered — sometimes youthful and vibrant, other times more complex and ageworthy given time.
